SIKKIM STATE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION GANGTOK


The office of the Sikkim State Human Rights Commission is located in the building of Vidhayak Aawas near Circuit House at VIP Colony, Gangtok.

The State Government in exercise of the powers conferred under Sub Section (1) of Section 21 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 vide Notification No. 101/HOME/2008 dated 18.10.2008 issued a Notification constituting the Sikkim State Human Rights Commission.

Thereafter, vide Notification 102/HOME/2008 dated 18.10.2008 the State Government in exercise of the powers conferred under Sub Section (1) of Section 22 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 constituted a committee consisting of:-

a) The Chief Minister -Chairperson
b) Speaker of the Legislative Assembly -Member
c) Minister-In-Charge, Department of Home -Member
d) Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly -Member


for the purpose of recommending the names of Chairperson and Members as provided under Sub Section (2) of Section 21 of Human Rights Act, 1993.

The State Government in exercise of the power conferred under Sub Section (3) of Section 21 of the Protection of the Human Rights Act, 1993 appointed Shri R.K. Purkayastha L.R-Cum-Secretary Law, Labour & Parliamentary Affairs Department as the Secretary to the Sikkim State Human Rights Commission.

Thereafter on the recommendation of the Committee Justice A.N. Ray, former Chief Justice, High Court of Sikkim was appointed as the Chairperson vide Notification No. 106/HOME/2008 dated 14.11.2008.

Presently, Hon’ble Justice N.K. Jain, former Chief Justice, High Court of Sikkim has been appointed as the Chairperson of Sikkim State Human Rights Commission vide Notification No. 88/Home/2014 dated 14.10.2014 and assumed the charge as the Chairperson w.e.f 08.10.2014.

Mrs. Lakchung Sherpa, L.R-Cum-Secretary Law Department has assumed the charge of the office of Secretary to the Sikkim State Human Rights Commission w.e.f 29.09.2014.
